The Advantage of Dose Dense chemotherapy
Defined Tag: Dose Dense Chemotherapy. Dose dense chemotherapy is showing surprising results in the treatment of breast cancer! This new type of treatment shortens the time between doses of chemotherapy and seems to have better results for those women whose cancer has spread from the breast to the lymph nodes. Recent studies have proven that this is a better medication regimen because of the shorter schedule. This kind of treatment has only been possible recently based on the fact that other new drugs are now available to conquer the one serious side effect of a condensed timetable of chemotherapy. The biggest problem with dose dense chemotherapy is that too often it can cause neutropenia. Someone with this condition will have damage to their white blood cells and so be more susceptible to infections. It can be serious enough to be life threatening. Someone with cancer cannot afford to have to deal with this medical issue on top of fighting their cancer. The advances in medical care have created drugs to prevent this from occurring and so to improve the chances of survival for those women who are fighting breast cancer. Studies that have been conducted recently have shown how much better this new type of chemotherapy treatment is. Those who have used the dose dense method have a shown an eighty two percent rate of survival after four years; this means survival without recurring breast cancer. Those who used the regular methods of chemotherapy had a seventy five percent disease free survival rate. The key here is not just the increased survival rate but the fact that there was not a recurrence of the disease. It appears that those breast cancer patients who used dose dense chemotherapy have a thirty one percent higher possibility of survival without a reoccurrence of the disease than those who are treated with the regular regimen of chemo. There are not more side effects for those on the dose dense plan and actually there are less cases of neutropenia because of the other medications taken during the chemo. It may not be the answer to treating cancers in general but it certainly is making a big difference to women fighting breast cancer.
