Ways to Administer Leukemia Chemotherapy

Leukemia treatment is almost always in the form of leukemia chemotherapy. The best way to fight this kind of cancer is by using strong drugs to kill the cancerous leukemia cells. Since there is more than one type of leukemia which drugs are used, and if more than one is necessary, are based solely on the form of the disease the patient has been diagnosed with. As well, the method of administering the drugs varies. The medications can be given to swallow or be put directly into the vein with a needle.

But, depending on the treatment, and how a person reacts to needles, one other method is to give the drugs by using a catheter. This treatment has several advantages over the injection method. To begin with if someone is getting leukemia chemotherapy over a long term it is easier on the veins not to have an intravenous line put in daily. Since the catheter remains in place it does not do the same harm as something that is put into the veins in a person’s arm regularly. This method leaves the catheter in the upper chest and so the intravenous line can be connected to it for each treatment session.

If the leukemia is believed to be a threat to the spine or the brain there is another method by which the drugs can be administered. This is done by injecting the chemotherapy medication directly into the spinal fluid. This may be the only way for the drugs to get to the proper place since the blood vessels can take the drugs directly to the brain or spinal cord. There is some protection around the brain that sometimes can block this if other methods are used. Sometimes cancer patients, children primarily, find the injections into the spinal column very painful. If so, there is one other way to deliver the leukemia chemotherapy. This involves a catheter being inserted under the scalp. Chemotherapy must be administered in treatment cycles. Usually these are a couple of weeks of treatment and then a couple of weeks of recovery to build the body back up and to prepare for the next session of treatment. There are other types of chemotherapy to fight leukemia but most of these are still in the trial stages.
